Summer Holiday - Cliff Richard

.......

Recently the blog’s seemed like a tourist information office – what with the river, Green Way, festes , and so on. To finish the job, the Lower Ebre Region (Terres de l'Ebre) also has some wonderful small coves with beautiful beaches, but if you fancy something different there’s nothing like the beaches of the Delta, mile after mile of deserted beaches with sea on both sides, plus some spectacular scenery. And, finally, inland we have the mountains of El Port, Cardo, the mountain villages of the Terra Alta. So, if you’ve had enough of the typical holidays of sun and beer, why not try the Terres de l’Ebre, in the south of Catalonia?

Having said that, I’ll now go to the real tourist office for my tip, and here’s Summer Holiday, Cliff Richard’s 1963 hit.

The Party’s Over (La Festa s’ha acabat) del Doris Day, 1956.
.....
Ghandi: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”.

Wednesday was a great day for Catalonia as the Catalan Parliament voted to pass a citizens’ bill to ban bull-fighting here for once and for all. Congratulations to all those people and groups who have worked for years towards this end, and to the politicians who for once actually lived up to our expectations and took this step forward. Maybe the vote was affected by Catalonia’s recent bickering with Spain, but the fact is that the origins of the campaign and petition backing this vote started many years back.

However, on a local level, in the south of Catalonia (Ebre lands – Terres de l’Ebre) many people are now worried that the next campaign will be to prevent another kind of bull-related “festa” which is celebrated here. Known as the correbous (bull running) it consists of intimidating or teasing bulls to make them chase you up and down the village streets but the bulls are often treated badly. Even more so in the different variations such as the one where the bull is basically forced into a tug-of-war as villagers fasten ropes to its horns, or the one where oil-soaked rags are wrapped round its horns and set alight at night. To sum up, as Youtube probably shows, a very nasty not particularly animal-friendly “festa”.

Many people are against it but the testicular shouting of those in favour carries the day, to such a point that the same political parties who voted to abolish bull fights, also support this activity here under the excuse that they have drawn up some guidelines to ensure the bull is not harmed.
Baddlewash! If they are so brave, why not just say the truth? The bull suffers but I don’t care! And vote for me!

Another reason to continue this “tradition” is apparently that they wouldn’t know what to do in the village festes without their daily dose of bulls. Nonsense, in the Terres de l’Ebre, perhaps 75% of villages do not have bulls in their local festivals and still manage to enjoy themselves.

Maybe an immediate ban is not on the cards given the (supposed) public support for this kind of "festa" but surely with education and scientific demonstrations of how much the bull suffers, people will realise that it is not worth it, and that there are other ways to meet up with their friends for a good time.

Anyway, today we celebrate, tomorrow we fight ... The Party’s Over. This version by Doris Day, 1956.

The last time the old steam railway line that ran up river from the lower Ebro into Aragon saw a train was back in 1973. Luckily, the route was restored and cleaned up a few years ago, converting it into a walk and cycle way which offers a fantastic unique opportunity to go up river through the countryside and mountains of the Ebro, through cool tunnels and hot dry forests, miles away from the nearest towns or roads. This kind of route is known as a Green Way here.

Cycling upstream from Tortosa is a fine summer sport, sweating it out until your water bottle runs dry, before turning round and coasting back down. Now, however, an oasis has appeared on the route. The disused run-down station of Benifallet, completely out in the wilds, has been done up and converted into a bar/restaurant with useful services like meals, showers, accommodation, and above all cool beer while lounging in a hammock listening to the crickets sing their summer song. I hope they are successful and we can see more of this kind of initiative here to make the most of the wonderful touristic opportunities offered by the Ebre countryside

Dog Days Are Over - Florence and the Machine

Aquí, amb Dog Days Are Over del LP Lungs.

Just about getting over the 3 days and nights of fun and enjoyment provided by Tortosa's Renaissance period festival ... all that remains is to congratulate the organizers, participants and hundreds of volunteers for the work they put in to enable us to travel 500 years back in time.
Don't know why, but racking my brains for something suitable, I've come up with Florence and the Machine again. Here they are (or she is) with Dog Days Are Over.

Tog é go Bog é - Kila.

Cantant, en irlandes, Tog é go Bog é de l'any 1997.

This weekend Tortosa celebrates its Renaissance Festival, 3 days of excitement and oldy-worldy activities fill the streets of the town. For those, like yours truly, who wouldn't know a Renaissance period from a Jurassic one, here's Mr Wikipedia's thoughts.
And here's a
short ad of the festival itself.

Not knowing any 500 year-old music, I'll go for Kila. Here they are with Tog é go Bog é from their 1997 LP of the same name.

Desperteu-vos, Wake up dels Arcade Fire

Desperteu-vos!! Wake Up del Arcade Fire.

One week after the protest march in Barcelona and still finding it hard to believe that over one million people were there (see video 2 posts back to get an idea of what one million – angry – people look like). Even more surprising, and worrying, though, have been the mediocre and weak political reactions. This week politicians have at least offered words on the importance of the protest, but it looks like once the summer holidays have been and gone, this will all be water under the bridge. Such a massive response from the public requires someone to take their feelings on board and actually do something! Not being an expert on revolutions, I’m not sure the moment has arrived yet to take the final step to independence, but it is clear that someone must unify Catalonia’s future route and start taking the first steps now. Who?

Sunday was also a pretty exciting day as we participated once more in the annual canoe event organized by the river Ebro campaign group. Over 100 kayaks and canoes covered the 12 km separating Xerta from Tortosa, a perfect opportunity for people to enjoy and get to know better one of the few living rivers in Catalonia, and appreciate just how delicate it is and why we need to preserve it.
Regarding the other sporting event on Sunday, suffice it to say that – seeing the line-ups, goal-scorers, tactics, and style of play - Barça football club won the World Cup :)

... Sam Cooke amb A change is gonna come (vindrà un canvi) de l’any 1964 (i el video de dalt és del web de El Periodico)

.....
On Saturday one and a half million Catalans (total population almost 7 million) participated in a protest march in Barcelona. Theoretically the demonstration was to protest about the Spanish Constitutional Court’s rulings regarding Catalonia’s autonomy, a decision which removes some of the Catalan government’s powers and proposals for new powers laid out in an agreement passed by both the Catalan and Spanish parliaments, as well as being passed in a referendum in Catalonia. However, from the slogans, banners, and songs, it soon became clear that a vast majority of protesters have given up on negotiations with Spain which seem to be taking us backwards rather than forwards, and were demanding something more – basically, independence.

If Spain does not want to accept it is a composite of different nations so be it. The Catalans defend the right to decide their own future and go in the direction the please. Will Catalan (forget the Spanish) politicians act according to the people’s will? On Saturday many prominent party leaders said things HAD changed, so let’s see if they still remember this in a few days .... it’s a all new ball game!

Fall at your feet - Crowded House

I així tenim als Crowded House, avui amb Fall At Your Feet (Finn) del LP Woodface, any 1991.

Fancy a dip? Look, there's room for one more, just there ... Is this the new pool we've been promised in Tortosa? It would certainly be an improvement on the current one, and with if this photo is anything to go by, would soon cover its costs! No, apparently it's the world's most crowded swimming pool, according to the Daily Mail.
Here's Crowded House with Fall at your Feet (Finn), from the 1991 LP Woodface.

People are strange - The Doors

Strange days indeed. What's the hidden meaning in finding Jesus' image in a field or a horse-man in the street? Both found on Google apparently.

Father and son - Cat Stevens

News story: man has child and no one knows who the mother is! Now that is an unusual twist, almost as good a story as "Man bites dog"! But when the person is question is a God among men, or so he thinks, anything is possible. Anyway, here's hoping he's a better father than footballer ...

From Russia With Love del Matt Monroe

Wow, Russian spies all over the UK! The big question is, though, just what were they after? I think they got the wrong country! Still, nice to see some spies are as sexy as James Bond's ones ....
Here's Matt Monroe singing From Russia With Love from the 1963 film of the same name.

Independence Day, Bruce Springsteen

Independence Day, del LP The River, 1980.

The 4th July, Independence Day for the USA will always be linked, musically, to Bruce's masterpiece. From his 1980 album, The River.

Where is the love dels Black Eyed Peas

Aquí tenim la primera cançó que jo vaig sentir d’ells, Where is the love? Del LP Elephunk, any 2003.
....

Quick look at the news. As could be seen from the group matches, England continued playing poorly and were knocked out of the World Cup – again. Who’s to blame? Apparently, the Premier League and its obsession on club before country, with clubs paying small fortunes for foreign players rather than bringing through young promising stars. We also have the “Golden Generation” or players who do not seem to be in touch with reality.

Back in Catalonia, the news is that the Spanish High Courts have declared parts of the new autonomy statutes to be anti-constitutional. There is an uproar about this here but personally I believe Catalonia needs much more than these new statutes so instead of arguing about them, they should go for broke and demand independence!

On the economic front Zapatero is following other world “leaders” by screwing the “usual suspects” and letting the rich and bankers off the hook.

On the river Ebro front, the European Commission has called Spain to attention over its poor, or non-existent, application of the new River Basin laws. But still neither the Catalan nor Spanish governments have made a move on guaranteeing a future for the Ebro’s ecosystems. Anyway, next weeken we have the annual canoe event where hundreds of local people will canoe down the Ebro.

And, today the Black Eyed Peas play in Barcelona. Here’s the first of their hits I remember hearing – Where is the love from 2003’s LP Elephunk.
