Avuí amb Sin Documentos, any 1993.

One of the few Spanish (well, half Spanish, half Argentinian!) groups I've got in my collection, Los Rodriguez with their 1993 hit Sin Documentos.

Make me smile (Come up and see me)

This week, back in 1975 while Franco was peacefully and slowly dying in his pyjamas, this song made number one in the UK.

Make Me Smile (Come up and see me) de Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel.

Hotel California

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair

Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air

Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light

My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell

And I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'

Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way

There were voices down the corridor,I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California, Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)

Such a lovely face

Plenty of room at the Hotel California

Any time of year (Any time of year)

You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends

She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends

How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.

Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain, 'Please bring me my wine'

He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'

And still those voices are calling from far away,

Wake you up in the middle of the night

Just to hear them say...Welcome to the Hotel California

Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)Such a lovely face

They livin' it up at the Hotel California

What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise), Bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling, The pink champagne on ice

And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device'

And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast

They stab it with their steely knives,But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I wasRunning for the door

I had to find the passage back to the place I was before

'Relax,' said the night man, 'We are programmed to receive. You can check-out any time you like,

But you can never leave!'

All you fascists (2)

.....
More of the same. Here's a letter I have had published in February's edition of the English-language magazine Catalonia Today. Swiftly followed up by Billy Bragg and Wilco singing their version of Woody Guthrie's song.
.....
FRANCO LIVES ON
Four important moments in the recent history of the Terres de l’Ebre explain the background leading to Tortosa’s present shame.
In 1936 Franco and his band of fascist troops and mercenaries attempted to overthrow the democratically-elected government of Spain. This coup d’état led to over two years of Civil War, including the Battle of the Ebro, where thousands upon thousands of young innocent lives were lost in a blood-thirsty four-month period. Franco, with the political and material support of Hitler and Mussolini, went on to win the war, while European democracies like England looked away. The result: 40 years of dictatorship, misery, repression and fear in the heart of Europe.
In 1966 Franco had a huge monument built in the middle of the river Ebro dedicated to his glory and that of the fascist soldiers who died in the battle.

Franco died in 1975 but his legacy continued to throw a dark shadow over the Ebro and its people.

Thirty-five years after his death, in 2010, the Mayor and council members of Tortosa voted in favour of maintaining this monstrosity in its original place. A heartless decision, both for those of us who believe in democratic values and, as such, do not understand how Franco’s illegal, illegitimate tyranny can still be on show in public, and to the victims and people who suffered under his dictatorship. A petition for the monument’s removal was signed by a thousand local citizens, with the backing of historians, sociologists, writers, artists, philosophers, and other public figures from Catalonia. It was ignored by Tortosa’s council, and so Franco’s legacy lives on in the 21st century.

All you fascists bound to lose

I després Woody Guthrie.
....

Franco died in 1975, 36 years ago, and we are still gingerly debating his fascist legacy in Tortosa! 6 years after his death, 23rd February 1981, there was a failed coup d’etât in Spain. Perhaps this explains why the transition to a democracy was done quietly and carefully with the least possible feather-ruffling, and maybe it was not a time to anger right-wing nostalgists by removing the monument that Franco erected in the middle of the river Ebro in Tortosa. But now, decades later?!
I have already explained my arguments in previous posts, so today I’ll leave you with an interview (in Catalan) with the “English” author Matthew Tree who has lived in Catalonia since 1984 and can hardly believe we still tolerate this fascist memorial in the centre of our beautiful city.

After Matthew, Woody Guthrie. Back in the 40s while the English were fighting Hitler, thanks, in part, due to our tolerance of fascism’s victory in Spain, Woody Guthrie was doing what he could with his fascist-killing machine!

The Longplayer project of a 1000-year piece of music has been playing now in Trinity Buoy Wharf lighthouse, London, ever since 31 December 1999 and has no plans to finish before 2999. It is played, technologically (human free), on 234 Tibetan singing bowls, in the lighthouse non stop, but occasionally 1000-minute sections are performed live, as in this clip from London Roundhouse in 2009. Click here for more info.

Enjoy it!!

Torna a venir Vicens - Jordi Barre

How The Camel Lost His Good Looks

Avuí un conte classic, traduit a l'anglès pels Friends of Tuva.

As regular visitors may remember, from time to time we include odds and ends from and about Tannu Tuva. Today, a folk tale translated (not by me, but by the Friends of Tuva website) from Tuvan into English. Our Catalan version to be appearing soon ...

How The Camel Lost His Good Looks

They say that long, long ago the Camel used to be one of the most handsome animals. He had a long fluffy tail and nice and mighty horns.
All the animals in the forest and the steppe were envious of the Camel. Many of them wanted to have the kind of tail that the Camel had, or the kind of horns he had.
The Camel knew of this and said proudly, "You won't find the kind of tail I have, or the horns, anywhere else in the world!''
But it would have been better if he had not boasted.
Once he came up to the river to have a drink of water and there met a Maral. "I'm invited to a party. Will you lend me your horns, just for a while?'' asked the Maral.
The Camel lent him his horns.
Later on that very day the Camel met a Horse.
"I'm invited to a party,'' said the Horse, "will you lend me your tail?''
The Camel agreed and stayed on the bank of the river.
The Maral and the Horse ran off. All day long the Camel was drinking water and looking up the road while waiting for them.
But there was no sign either of the Maral, or of the Horse.
The Maral had deceived the Camel and skipped over to the taiga. He stayed there for ever and never went out into the open steppe. He got accustomed to the horns as if they were his.
The Horse never gave back the borrowed tail and when he comes across the Camel, he gets frightened and runs away.
That is how the Camel lost his good looks and sweet temper.

Check out previous Tuvan posts for Tuvan music, but today I think Neil Young's golden age fits in nicely. Here he is again with A Man Needs a Maid

Cortez the killer

Cortez The Killer, del Neil Young, any 1975.

School

Supertramp - School

....

Another theoretically good decision of the previous Catalan government, but universally disliked for practical reasons. Traditionally Catalan schools have holidays in summer, easter, and christmas, but no half-term breaks. Listening to the experts, this year they have introduced a half-term break at the end of February. Sounds great, and should help children to clear their heads as they go through the long winter slog. However, Catalan employers do not offer really flexible holidays and as such most parents will not be able to fit this week into their worklife. The result; many kids will still go the school buildings for a fee-paying “baby-sitting” service, or spend a week with the grandfolks.

Cat People (Putting Out Fire)

Molt bona! A la banda sonora, usen la cançó de Bowie, Cat People (Putting Out Fire), originalment de la pel·lí Cat People, de l'any 1982.
.....

As days go by with no internet connection at home, you have to go back to old habits. Either speak to the wife, or watch the telly. (warning; sexist joke coming...). Well, of all the films I've seen this week, I could recommend Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.
For the soundtrack he re-used Bowie's Cat People (Putting out fire).

Underneath Your Clothes

Underneath Your Clothes, Shakira.

...
Catalan politicians spend their weekends appearing at different activities so as to make sure they are on the news 7 days a week. The English don't, usually. Thank God for small mercies!

Catalan trains run just as badly as the English ones but at half the price. A bargain!

While many English believe that eating while you are indulging in alcoholic drinks is a waste of time, delaying the oncoming "happy" feeling, the Catalans actually believe wine is for accompanying meals!

Catalan people seem to look after their appearance with regular changes of clothing during the same day, even to go to the cinema where surely no one can see you! They usually get changed as soon as they get home so as to keep their "nice" clothes clean for the following day. In my experience, the English don't. That's not to say the English are "dirty" - I, for one, change my underpants every month whether they need washing or not....

Shopping

.....

The English sure beat the Catalans hands down in one thing - shopping and spending. It would not be true to say that the Catalans do not participate in the consumerism race, but nowhere near the level of the English. Here in Catalonia shops actually close on Sundays!

Food Glorious Food

...
And on to curious difference no.4. In my limited experience, the English (in general) do not seem to pay much attention to food. In general we do not really care when or what we eat. Catalans do not only eat more and very well, but they also spend much more time thinking and talking about food. Mealtime conversations often are about the food itself.
As Oliver said, Food Glorious Food.

Chips Ahoy!

Chips Ahoy! del The Hold Steady.

......

Third slight cultural difference. While the English love vinegar on their chips, the Catalans don't.

Chips Ahoy!
